A herd of Highland cattle at Taverham Mill nature reserve near Norwich has become an unexpected social media phenomenon, drawing thousands of visitors this summer. Videos of the flame-haired cows racked up hundreds of thousands of views on TikTok, prompting fans to travel from across the country to see them in person.
Reserve manager Harry Waye-Barker described the influx as “bonkers,” noting that the herd, previously a quiet summer attraction, has seen unprecedented attention. Visitors have driven from as far as Devon to catch a glimpse of the cattle, which are known for their striking appearance and gentle temperament.
The seven female Highland cattle also play an important conservation role, grazing on the reserve’s water meadow to maintain the ecosystem. However, the surge in visitors and the popularity of sugar beet treats offered to feed the cows began to interfere with their regular diet and grazing habits. The reserve has temporarily suspended the treats to ensure the cattle return to their natural eating patterns.
“This summer has been incredible, but also a real team effort,” Waye-Barker said, thanking staff, volunteers, and the local community for helping manage the crowds. Despite the challenges, the reserve is enjoying the opportunity to introduce new visitors to the cattle and the surrounding landscape, highlighting the unexpected power of social media to connect people with nature.
