Immersive Habitats for Local Wildlife
Blank Park Zoo in Des Moines has unveiled plans for a new exhibit called Wild Iowa, dedicated to showcasing animals native to the state. The exhibit will feature species such as river otters, bald eagles, and bobcats, giving visitors a closer look at the wildlife that naturally inhabits Iowa. The otter habitat includes an underwater viewing tunnel, while the bald eagles will have elevated perches above visitor pathways.
Educational and Conservation Goals
The Wild Iowa exhibit is part of the zoo’s broader mission to promote local wildlife awareness and conservation. By focusing on species from Iowa, the zoo aims to create a meaningful connection between guests and their regional environment. Informational signage and interactive elements will provide educational opportunities for children and adults alike.
Expansion and Visitor Experience
Construction of Wild Iowa is progressing alongside a Big Cat expansion as part of an $18-million capital campaign. The project also includes improved pathways, accessibility features, and enhanced interpretive displays. The zoo anticipates opening the exhibit in the coming years, offering a unique and engaging experience that highlights Iowa’s native ecosystems.
