A Tribute to a Local Favourite
A memorial has been unveiled at Lincolnshire Wildlife Park to celebrate the life of Nigel, a three-legged puma who captured the hearts of visitors before his death last year. The statue now stands outside his former enclosure in Friskney, accompanied by a board telling the story of his struggles and resilience.
Park owner and CEO Steve Nichols said the response has been overwhelming, with people travelling from across the county to take photos with the sculpture. “I can’t go anywhere in Lincolnshire without someone mentioning Nigel,” he said.
From Timid Cub to Social Media Star
Nigel arrived at the park at around 10 months old with exotropia, a condition that caused both eyes to turn outward. Nichols remembers him as a nervous, skinny young cat who slowly gained confidence in his new surroundings. Over time, the pair formed a close bond, and Nigel became something of an online sensation as visitors followed his journey.
His life, however, was marked by repeated health challenges. He underwent surgery to remove a tumour and later required another operation after swallowing a piece of rubber from a toy. Arthritis eventually led to the amputation of one of his legs. Despite the major procedure, Nichols said Nigel bounced back with kitten-like energy, seemingly unaware of what he had endured.
A Lasting Memory
In his later years, Nigel’s health declined again when arthritis developed in another leg. In June 2025, at the age of 13, the difficult decision was made to put him to sleep to spare him further pain. News of his passing prompted an outpouring of support online, reflecting just how much he meant to the community.
The £5,500 sculpture, created by local artist Andreolli Christian, was funded entirely by donations raised within a week. For Nichols and the many visitors who admired Nigel’s spirit, the memorial ensures that his story — one of resilience, charm and determination — will not be forgotten.
