Rangers Intercept Vehicle Near Cambodia Border
Thai rangers have arrested two men after discovering 81 macaques and methamphetamine inside a vehicle stopped near the Cambodian border, authorities said. The interception took place in Sa Kaeo province’s Aranyaprathet district, where the 12th Ranger Forces Regiment was conducting routine patrols. The animals were packed tightly into blue mesh bags, and officers reported that several appeared distressed after the long journey.
Wildlife Trafficking Route Under Scrutiny
Officials said the suspects confessed they were transporting the animals for sale, though the intended destination remains under investigation. Macaques are frequently targeted by traffickers supplying the exotic pet trade, biomedical markets, or restaurants across Southeast Asia. Thai wildlife authorities have taken custody of the monkeys and are currently assessing their health before transferring them to a rehabilitation center.
Drugs Seized Alongside the Animals
Rangers also found methamphetamine pills and crystal meth in the vehicle, though the exact quantities have not been disclosed. Investigators are examining whether the suspects were part of a larger network that moves both drugs and wildlife across Thailand’s eastern border. Police said charges related to wildlife trafficking and narcotics possession are expected as the case proceeds.
