A New Haven for Wildlife and Outdoor Recreation
Dane County has officially opened the 923-acre Sugar River Wildlife Area, one of the largest public conservation properties in the county. Located in Verona and Montrose Townships, the area features more than 1.5 miles of river frontage along the Sugar River and Badger Mill Creek. County officials say the site will provide opportunities for hiking, paddling, hunting, and fishing while protecting valuable wetland and prairie habitats.
Restoration and Access Improvements Completed
Before the public opening, crews removed old buildings, constructed new parking areas, installed canoe and kayak landings, and placed boundary signage to ensure safe access. The project also included habitat restoration work to reestablish native grasses and improve wildlife corridors. County leaders highlighted the site’s dual purpose — offering new recreational space and strengthening local ecosystems.
Part of a Larger Conservation Effort
The Sugar River Wildlife Area is part of Dane County’s ongoing commitment to expand protected lands and improve water quality across the region. Funded in part through the county’s Conservation Fund, the project adds to a growing network of natural areas open to the public. Officials plan continued restoration and management work to support trout habitat, migratory birds, and pollinators, ensuring the property remains a natural refuge for years to come.
